The Xbox Family

The book I read to research this post was My Xbox, Xbox 360, Kinect & Xbox Live which is a very good book which I read at http://safaribooksonline.com. This book doesn’t give much coverage to the original Xbox & discourages you from buying one of the earlier versions of the Xbox 360 as it isn’t compatible with the Kinect which more or less revolutionized the 360. The Kinect is a bit like the Wii in that there is a sensor that detects bodily movement that is incorporated into the game. If you have one of the earlier versions of the 360 the operating system has been updated in later models and if you want to take advantage of this you need to download the operating system from Xbox Live, burn it on a DVDR and then install it on your 360. Later models also had a wireless controller and to connect these to the console turn it on and press the Xbox button on the controller. With most 360 games there are lots of things like additional levels and characters you can download. Often you need a pass which you can buy for that specific game or group of games and that is valid for a set period. The Xbox Live Gold membership gives you cloud storage among other things which is useful because the hard drives on the 360’s are of limited capacity. Another feature in Xbox Live is beacons where you can tell your friends in one go what game you are currently playing. You can also download music and video from Zune Marketplace. I did find this book really interesting and it contains lots of step by step guides to doing things.
